John Byrne Fires Up the F.F. Again

The Fantastic Four used to proclaim themselves "The World's Greatest Comic Mag(azine)" Well under Byrne's helm it could rightfully be said so.

The trick of revitatalizing a franchise is to know what to take, what to emulate, what to improve upon and what to leave behind. Byrne is going full steam ahead.

Byrne builds on the characters without forgetting their roots. He touches on the great FF epics while telling new stories. It looks like a combo of Stan and Jack with a litle Larry Niven style science fiction thrown in.

The book starts out with a trip into the Negative Zone. Along the way they encounter many a science fiction twist while all the time trouble is brewing in the Baxter Building that brings in no less than the Avengers (another series Byrne worked on).

This book includes the famous "widescreen" version that had to be read sideways (but alas the free tattoo inserts are not reprinted).

With Annihilus and Galactus as villians and a case that leads right back to the second fantastic four adventure way back in F.F. #2 how could you go wrong??

Early experiments

3-1/2 stars. I consider volumes 3, 6 & 7 in this series to be about average to slightly above average in quality. If the 2nd paperback was a solid step forward in figure drawing, this 3rd edition almost seems like 2 steps back? What happened?...

The end of the 2nd edition gives us Byrne's famous issue #249, to this day some of the best artwork he's ever produced. You'd think he would continue on to bigger & better things. Instead, Byrne gets highly experimental in both story and art here, perhaps as a reaction to seemingly reaching his artistic zenith. This isn't a bad collection of experiments; it's just that my expectations for this volume were for something so much better.

Included in this 3rd volume: about 5 issues dealing with the Negative Zone, Franklin & Annihilus, one having a sideways layout for the art; Daredevil & Avengers as brief guest stars dealing with Annihilus; a Thing solo story; a Galactus, Nova & Skrulls conflict; and a FF Annual with pencils & colors only (no inks).

The experimental nature of this edition is obvious. That sideways issue and the annual with no inks are both out of the ordinary. Byrne's inks too take on a new direction: being now a little more loose & unrefined, a bit like Frank Miller's eighties Marvel work. The Negative Zone story arc has an early Sci-Fi/ Star Trek feel to it. It's not that any of this stuff is really all that bad. It's just that I consider the other volumes in Byrne's run to be that much better.

Reproduction values not entirely up to par...

The stories and artwork in this volume are classic, but I find it disappointing that a substantial chunk of the book suffers from poor, muddy reproduction of the linework. This is not a minor point since (1) Byrne's artwork is detailed, and easily suffers from dropouts and blotchiness if it isn't reproduced carefully and (2) the original publication dates of these comics wasn't so long ago that there isn't any reason not to put out a top quality job. Fortunately, only a portion of the reprints in this edition suffer from this problem, and the other volumes in this series have crisp reproduction throughout (as of this writing, Volume 5 is the most recent volume to be published).

Beautiful hairstyles; very difficult if you're a beginner

The hairstyles are great, don't get me wrong. There's a good mix of "trendy" and "wear-to-work." But I feel the need to warn buyers that a) this is NOT a book for beginners; and b) this ONLY has hairstyles for very long hair. If you're like me and can't french braid your own hair or have longish medium-length hair, don't waste the money. Maybe I'm just uniquely useless at hairstyling, but that's why I bought a book! The photos are close-ups so it's hard to figure out where the model is positioning her hands, and because most of them are in black and white it can be difficult to figure out the precise instructions (the photo quality could be better). I have tried several of the "easier" styles on myself (bohemian, braid-bun) with absolutely no success.

If you have long hair and already have moderate hairstyling skill, you won't go wrong. But if your hair isn't six inches past your shoulders or you're just starting to experiment with your hair and struggling, this is only going to confound you.

For those with some exisiting hair skills.

I am slightly inept when it comes to my hair. I have a lot of hair, but not a lot of skill. I was excited to try this book as (unlike many of the books I considered) most of the styles are contemporary and feminine, and most seem adaptable to curly/wavy hair (thanks, Abby!). I also appreciated the mix of casual and dressy looks. The book did meet all of those expectations! I also felt the hair care tips included in the front of the book; I like the addition of the importance of hair care and maintenance in addition to styling. I also LOVED that ALL the images are full color images. Although I love my own (and others') dark hair, I think it's a huge positive that she has light hair to model; it's a little easier to note the depth/details/layers in images of light hair. And overall, the size of the book is good. Large enough to allow good image size, but not oversized and unwieldy.

Styles are, unsurprisingly, geared toward long or medium-to-long hair. With the exception of a few images of children, the author appears to be the hair model for every style.

However, I did have to deduct a star for two (sort of three) reasons.
1.) The "Mane Reason" (my half-hearted apologies for the pun...) that I deducted the star was that this simply did not "start at the foundation" of every style. She presumes you already both know how to do a few braids and (more importantly, to me) know how to do them on your OWN head (I can French braid a friend's straight hair; however French braiding my own curly/wavy mess is way challenging). I think there should have been some space devoted particularly to those skills. As it was, I was lost time and again. Her website does help a bit with this. I would have liked TONS of tips on working with your own hair when it's hard to see what you're doing!
2.) Not every step is shown in every style. This relates to the above, but I felt it worth mentioning individually. Styles are shown One Style to a page/One Page to a Style. So, the step-by-step process seems in places to be abbreviated. Perhaps this is a moment to speak to the publisher: add a few more pages if necessary.
3.) I wish this came with spiral binding. That would make it more user friendly while styling.

A bonus I did not expect: the books does include an access code for Abby's website tutorials.

I would recommend this to anyone with a basic set of hair styling skills. Can you French Braid your own hair without cursing it? If yes, buy this book. If no, you may want to master than first. I think this is for "advanced beginners" and up. True clueless girls (like me!) will find it more challenging. If that's you, ask yourself how much effort you are willing to commit. If you're ready to apply yourself, buy it but realize you'll need to couple it with some help (from a friend or online). This book wont take you from zero.

Very few styles, not really worth the money; get The Braiding Handbook instead

Had hoped for more varieties of classic braids, not braids, variations and a bunch of twists and buns. Disappointing, thin, pamphlet-like book, not many styles for the price. Not worth the money. The Braiding Handbook is thicker, cheaper, has more styles than this. Not recommended at all.

Spoiler Alert: We all die at the end.

The line, incorrectly credited to Frank Sinatra, might well have been said by a much older less hip Doug Stanhope about persons of my ilk; we might be utterly boring recluses but we love good comedy. That is obvious, we bought the book didn’t we? He lives this life so the rest of us don’t have to, and it’s truly comforting that Doug is out there fighting the good fight. A mere mortal man would surely perish in the wake of such depravity and substance abuse, but it’s clear Doug is no ordinary human being. He is the liver of life, the teller of truth, and the slayer of pretense. In America we might have the freedom to engage in this kind of outrageous debauchery and moral degradation, except in further contemplation we don’t. There is little question that many of the activities described in this book would land any one of us for a long stretch in federal prison, so don’t try this at home. You have to marvel at Doug’s stamina and ability to slip the grasp of Johnny Law. It proves without question that love conquers all, especially when it’s a mother’s love.

So who knew that this ex-telemarketing scam artist drunken reprobate mama’s boy could write. Damn you Doug Stanhope for getting me all misty eyed on the last page. Damn you for making me spend another $15.46 to send a copy to my sister because of our mother.

Doug, you lucked out writing a good book this time, you even got Johnny D to write the foreword. We all know about the lawsuit, it was payback wasn’t it? But let’s see if you can do it again with a follow up book, I mean you half way promised to tell us the story of Adderal Jack and Rebecca Jean. But the sophomore effort is always tougher, do you have the stones to try it? We’ll be waiting.

Thank you Doug, for bettering my life immeasurably.

I had pre-ordered this and I was thrilled when it arrived this morning. I can not put into words how beautifully Doug's masterful storytelling has filled the inch and a half thick void under the bent third leg of my dining room table. Now my beer doesn't spill when I sit alone, drunkenly weeping. Thanks to Doug and his dead mom I was finally able to bury the dead frog that I've been using to level off the table for all these months. I can't recommend this enough.

Vulnerable, honest, vulgar, hilarious, sad. This has everything a memoir/comedy book needs.

I've been boarding his work for years and when he announced that he was writing a book about his mother, I pre-ordered it immediately. As soon as Amazon carried it. I wanted to learn more about his life. Her life. People that lived the way they believed. Not inhibited by passed- down social inheritance.

The book starts with the death of his mother, which you already know all about if you listen to his stand up. He doesn't get sappy or sentimental but keeps things moving.

He spends a lot of time explaining how he worked as a con man in phone sales. Personally I would have like to hear more about his stand-up life and less about his life on the phone. However the stories related to his phone career are still entertaining and hilarious.

Once dog starts writing about his stand up live the story becomes more interesting. It was a rare insight into one of my role models and the life he lived.

The story itself is honest and painful and true. When I finish the book I compared it to other memoirs ever read. And this one sticks out among all of them. Including Angela's Ashes. And other prize-winning memoirs. While this won't likely be winning any awards, it is certainly worth reading and sharing with your friends.

I cannot wait for the next book. I'd read anything by this guy.

Error analysis done right in Inertial Navigation

I first obtained a copy of this book in the mid seventies (last century). I was in the process of attempting to develop a unified error analysis for an inertial navigation problem. I looked through the existing literature and textbooks, at that time, and felt that there were some fundamental mistakes and awkward assumptions being make. I estimated that it would have taken me about 6 months to develop a systematic general theory.
However, upon reviewing some of the literature, especially with respect to error analysis associated with local vertical navigation, many of the papers referred to Kenneth Britting's book. I ordered the book, and got through it in a day or two. Wonderful. I had been struggling with my own derivations, so I was able to digest the material rather rapidly.
In the introduction, Section 1.3 - A Critique of Previous Analysis Techniques, Dr. Brittting is very gentle in his critique in his assessment of other previous approaches used to develop perturbation equations of motion. I would have used descriptions like: erroneous, artificial, opaque, etc.
I recommend this book to anyone who is going to be working in depth in the field of inertial navigation. This is an excellent starting point for development of estimators and filters, especially since the underlying theory relies predominantly on a linearized development (perturbation equations).
This book, obviously, will be suitable for only a small audience. But I consider it central and essential to the problem of error analysis in the field of inertial navigation.

I used a copy of this book in my graduate studies on inertial navigation systems in the early 90s. The book was out of print then, and our instructor received permision to make copies from his original for us. I have used the reproduced pages so many times they are falling out of the binder! I was happy to see they republished this. It is the essential inertial navigation book for those in the field.

A Fine Primer on Ireland

Robert Kee's "Ireland: A History" is, simply put, a fine introductory overview of modern Ireland. By "modern" I refer to the time from a bit before the Viking invasion (roughly 797 C.E.), through the Free State to the founding of the Republic and into "The Troubles" of today. For my money, the book's major flaw was its brief, superficial treatment of ancient Celtic Ireland. There is so much more to Ireland's Gaelic past than Kee covers that one will need other books to fill this gap. As a dual national -- I'm an Irish and a U.S. citizen -- I did not really "need" Kee's book to learn of modern or ancient Ireland, or the supplementary works I later bought to cover the pre-Viking material his "Ireland: A History" did not; I already knew a fair bit about this as a function of my birth. [A Dublin-born Irishman gave me Kee's book to read while I lived in Cyprus, where English-language books are very dear, and one reads what one may already have read or known to save money.] As a further note, ultra-Republican friends of mine scoff at what they characterize as Kee's "royalist/loyalist" leanings, dismissing out of hand anything he has to say as not quite "shamrock green" enough for a "True Republican" to be citing him as a source on anything Irish. I personally did not find Kee a propagandist for the Crown, so do not subscribe out of hand to this IRA carping. I can grouse, however, at Kee's or his editors' failure to state in which Dublin museum hangs the heartbreaking painting of "The Flight of the Earls," found on page 38 of the book. On one occasion, I'd sought out the painting in the National Gallery in Dublin, only to learn it hung in another museum -- which was closed the day I went after it. Notwithstanding this, in my humble opinion, for those not of Irish extraction or citizenship (or ultra-Republican bent), Kee's book is a good, easily readable, healthy introduction to the Emerald Isle. It is devoid of any blarney-sentimental cliches or slanderous stereotyping of the "glib, gab-gifted, Guinness-gulping" Irishman. And it pulls no punches at Britain's guilt for its arguably deliberate genocide of the Irish in the Great Famine of 1845-49 and those lesser ones that grass-stained starving Irish mouths and blood-stained the 19th century. But it will fill in only so many blanks in one's understanding of that ageless island and its early people, with their lost-in-mists religions, languages, superstitions, culture and monuments. Those wanting more will have to buy other works, such as Peter Beresford Ellis' "The Ancient World of the Celts," for instance. Overall, I found Kee's "Ireland: A History" a good survey course in Ireland, so much so that I bought it as a gift for a friend of Irish extraction, who'd developed a keen interest in tracing his own roots -- and in applying for Irish citizenship. On balance, Kee's book is worth the money and the read.

Recent Irish History

It's not possible to compress the rich history of Ireland into one small book, but this book which spans about two centuries is well written and concise. The book was assigned for a Stanford University Continuing Studies course and was a very interesting overview of recent history. The themes of Irish dissension against the British were well developed.

[A Dublin-born Irishman gave me Kee's book to read while I lived in Cyprus, where English-language books are very dear, and one reads what one may already have read or known to save money.] As a further note, ultra-Republican friends of mine scoff at what they characterize as Kee's "royalist/loyalist" leanings, dismissing out of hand anything he has to say as not quite "shamrock green" enough for a "True Republican" to be citing him as a source on anything Irish. I personally did not find Kee a propagandist for the Crown, so do not subscribe out of hand to this IRA carping. I can grouse, however, at Kee's or his editors' failure to state in which Dublin museum hangs the heartbreaking painting of "The Flight of the Earls," found on page 38 of the book. On one occasion, I'd sought out the painting in the National Gallery in Dublin, only to learn it hung in another museum -- which was closed the day I went after it. Notwithstanding this, in my humble opinion, for those not of Irish extraction or citizenship (or ultra-Republican bent), Kee's book is a good, easily readable, healthy introduction to the Emerald Isle. It is devoid of any blarney-sentimental cliches or slanderous stereotyping of the "glib, gab-gifted, Guinness-gulping" Irishman. And it pulls no punches at Britain's guilt for its arguably deliberate genocide of the Irish in the Great Famine of 1845-49 and those lesser ones that grass-stained starving Irish mouths and blood-stained the 19th century. But it will fill in only so many blanks in one's understanding of that ageless island and its early people, with their lost-in-mists religions, languages, superstitions, culture and monuments. Those wanting more will have to buy other works, such as Peter Beresford Ellis' "The Ancient World of the Celts," for instance. Overall, I found Kee's "Ireland: A History" a good survey course in Ireland, so much so that I bought it as a gift for a friend of Irish extraction, who'd developed a keen interest in tracing his own roots -- and in applying for Irish citizenship. On balance, Kee's book is worth the money and the read.

AME Group's book, PMP Exam Practice Questions and Solutions, was key in my passing the PMP exam on the first attempt and by a substantial margin! I think this book is 'must have' study material. AME Group's (Aileen's) questions and explanations of Best and Wrong answers accelerated the process of understanding content and the inter-relationships of the project management processes. I also used Rita Mulcahy's PMP Exam Prep which had some very helpful information that can't be found in the PMBOK guide. However, I found Aileen's questions and solutions to be more representative of the exam than Rita's and much easier to digest. --R. Trojan

Going through Aileen Ellis' AME Group PMP Exam Prep Class and using her PMP Exam Practice Questions and Solutions book was key in my passing the exam on the first try and receiving my PMP Credential. I have looked at several other PMP Exam Prep books and sets of Exam Prep Questions but none of them held up to AME Group's approach. Aileen's catch phrase ;Why the best answer is best and the wrong answers are wrong; accurately describes how she has carefully engineered a learning system that allows the PMP (or CAPM) candidate to place the myriad facts; Knowledge Areas; Process Groups; Inputs, Tools and Techniques, and Outputs; and the PMI Mindset; into an understandable context that greatly facilitates absorbing the PMBOK and thus being able to pass the exam. And, her questions were much more in line with what I saw in my exam than other sets of questions I have seen. In addition to using AME Group's PMP Exam Practice Questions and Solutions book, those fortunate enough to also attend Aileen's PMP (or CAPM) Prep Classes as I did will also benefit from her ability to relate what's in the PMBOK to actual Project Management - sort of a two for the price of one; benefit that also contributes to the very impressive;Pass Rate; enjoyed by her students. The book also provides hundreds of questions and answers similar to other exam preparation books. This book, unlike many others, explains why incorrect answers are wrong and provides references directing the reader to additional sources if needed or desired. Less than my expectations for taking an expensive test.

In virtually all professional testing I have done in 40 years of engineering, flying, and professional development, when I have paid this much for a book of test questions, I have an expectation of some of these questions showing up on the actual test. The material in the PMP course is extremely detailed. This practice test book test depth was not nearly detailed enough to prepare for the PMP test. I thought I was prepared by understanding these questions. That was not true. I don't like being negative. But I like even less being led to believe that I was preparing correctly for this expensive test.

Not the greatest but useful.

Nothing wrong with this book. However if you want test questions then I would use the website [...] The reason this is a better option is that it simulates the actual question of the test and gives you PDU's to boot. I found this book really did not help me for the test as much as I wanted it too. I would recommend it a tool to help you study but as a test prep tool not so much. Stick with the InSite test banks prior to your test and you will be fine!

About the Author
Mrs. de Spain is eminently qualified to compile this cookbook. She has been a toxicologist and a pharmacologist for the Food and Drug Administration. She was a histologist specializing in diet research at the University of Chicago, and she has conducted animal-diet research at the University of Pennsylvania. She has taught at the John Robert Powers School of Modeling and Charm and now teaches a series of her own courses in nutrition, creative organic cooking and total care for self and family.

quack quack - or so the FDA would have us believe. I don't have cancer but extremely high blood pressure, diet and wagners kyolic garlic has done what mainstream medication failed to do.

It's BAD NEWS for skin cancer!

Skin cancer has high mortality rates and as a boat builder, swimmer, diver and life guard, my years in the sun did some real damage. An alkaline diet and this little book has helped me hugely in working against my whole-body skin cancer. I dominate my meals with these recipies!

Learn where to find B-17

Recipes are a bit exotic for my taste and habits. I like simple, raw, and natural for vegetables and fruits; small amounts of meat and good gravy with enough onion to make it taste and smell great, so I found the recipes mainly useful for learning the ingredients that have vitamin B-17, but I'm not a gourmet who wants all that work and bowls and measuring of many ingredients!
