About the Author

A very useful resource for research.

This book was extremely helpful in my research on serial murder. It is a good, concise, rendition of research, theories, and paradigms of multiple homicide. I recommend this book to anyone writing a research paper or who wants a synopsis of major research conducted on the topic of serial murder.

Excellent book for research ! Highly recommend!!!

This book was such an enormous help to me while I gathered information for a study I am doing on serial killers. The way it is organized and divided into different types of killers was very useful and helped me get a good handle on what types of people commit serial crimes and their personal characteristics. Also helpful is the info on different theories people have had on serial murderers. I also liked that it was to the point and without a lot of unnecessary information. Well written, easy to read (and quick to read!) and full of very useful information, this book is not a sensationalist look at this subculture but a well-researched, well-balanced review of serial killers written by a psychologist with many many books to his name. Extremely helpful and very interesting indeed.

Even though there isn't any groundbreakingly new info in this book, it contains all of the research that has been done on serial killers and there is no other book that does that. It is full of really interesting information and I highly recommend it. I read it from cover to cover!

About the Author
Raphael Patai (1911-1996) was a prominent cultural anthropologist, historian, and biblical scholar of international reputation. He was the author of more than three dozen books on Jewish and Arab culture, history, politics, psychology, and folklore.

The best complilation in English

This book is the most comprehensive compilation of Jewish texts about the Messiah that I know of in English. When it first came out, it filled a great need for an intelligently-written book where both Jews and non-Jews could read the traditional sources on what Jews believe about the Messiah. As it turns out, those sources are much richer and far more complex that you might imagine.
Patai does not seek to present any particular doctrine as "the truth," nor does he seek to convert anybody to anything. He simply presents all the materials he could find, with some academic overviews of the basic themes. His approach is that of an academic folklorist, not a theologian -- in fact, the book is subtitled "Jewish Legends of Three Thousand Years."
The chapters cover such things as pre-existent names of the Messiah, prophecies, apocalyptic writings, birth of the Messiah, stages of the Great Redemption, Last Judgement, Resurrection, dreams and visions of the future world, etc. There are sources from the Bible, Talmud, Midrash, medieval texts, Hasidic teachings, and modern accounts. Plus there are literary references to the Messiah from such writers as Elie Wiesel, Scholom Asch, Martin Buber, Jacob Wasserman, etc. All in all, 337 pages of prime material.
Most interesting were the various people who have claimed (or were once thought to be) the Jewish Messiah, ranging from Bar Kochba to Shabbetai Zevi to -- get this -- Theodore Herzl! Yes indeed, the founder of the Zionist movement once dreamed that he was the Chosen One (see pp. 272-73) and apparently saw himself as a savior of the Jewish people -- albeit a secular one. (And I suppose if this book were to be updated now, it would also include the late Lubovitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, as well. He never made the claim, but some of his followers did.)
One rather startling piece of info is a chapter on a mythological character named "Armilus" who is a villain that will oppose the true Messiah (see pp. 156-64.) This brought me up short, because the Edgar Cayce readings say that the soul of Jesus is called "Armilius" in the next world. Prior to reading Patai's book, that was the only reference to any "Armilius" I had heard of. Did Cayce read this legend somewhere? If so, he got the story all mixed up, because the Armilus described in the Messiah texts is a pretty nasty guy and not at all like the Jesus of the Gospels.
When the true Messaih does come, according to the legends in this book, the righteous will be treated to a heavenly banquet, where they will eat the Leviathan, a huge fish-creature created especially for this purpose. Also served will be it's dry-land counterpart, Behemoth. (Which means "beast" in Hebrew. Anybody care for a nice juicy slice of Roast Beast?) Those who prefer fowl can enjoy the flesh of the Ziz, a wading bird of cosmic proportions. (Vegetarians, I suppose, will dine on the fruits from the Garden of Eden.)
All in all, this is an excellent sourcebook for teachings that range from the sublime to the utterly bizarre. If you only buy one book on Jewish Messiah texts, this is it!

Messiah Texts is a comprehensive study of messianic prophecy

The Messiah Texts is a comprehensive study of Hebrew messianic prophecy. It explores such topics as pre-existence of the messiah, the suffering messiah theme in Jewish tradition, the signs of times of the messiah. It also explores the Suffering Servant - Israel connection, conceding that the Suffering Servant is a psychological projection of Israel. The quality of research is excellent: excrepts include quotes from Zohar, Genesis Rabbah, Sefer Zerubabel and, of course, the Bible. This book does not present any religious dogma, it simply explores the subject. Anyone studying the Messianic prophecy & tradition will benefit from reading The Messiah Texts.

Excellent translation of primary sources

I picked up my copy of the Messiah Texts in a now-defunct New Mexico metaphysical bookstore, Brotherhood of Life. The only Jewish book in the building, the book had sat on the shelf so long it was permeated with the smell of incense. I loved it the minute I opened it and promptly bought it. Over the years my copy lost its fragance, but not its usefulness. When I was working on my own book, THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF JEWISH MYTH, MAGIC, AND MYSTICISM, it was invaluable in pointing me to primary sources and highlighting both the major themes and obscure byways of Jewish messianism.

While making heads or tails of the Midrashic style of many of the entries will prove daunting to the casual reader, this book is real prize for anyone interested in Jewish messianic traditions.

A great book for anyone with a fear of public speaking

This book is a must have for anyone dealing with a fear of public speaking. For years I have darn right terrified with public speaking. Jezra Kaye book not only showed me what mistakes I was specifically making with regards to presenting my speeches, but offered easy and simple instructions on how to improve my presentations.

These skills are important as they can be transferred to so many areas in your daily life, from putting together a presentation for work, talking at a local PTA meeting, or church, to interviewing for that next job. I highly recommend this book!

No Rules, Universe Info, but Poor Artwork

The TTA Handbook, "Local Space 2200 AD" arrived today, and I thought I'd share some first impressions. Firstly it's a roughly 15cm by 23cm softcover book, the same dimesions as the TTA RPG. It has a pleasant CGI generated cover, and is about half the width of the TTA RPG book.

I had been lead to believe that it was just going to contain the new material from the TTA RPG, without all the Rules and game stuff, however there has been some work done on this title to make it more than just that. For example, rather that give us a cut and paste of the History section from the RPG and Spacecraft, a more streamlined introduction has made for an easier read. It also omits the intro by Cowley to be found at the front of the TTA RPG. The book reproduces all race and stellar system information on the Proximans, Alphans and Humans, anatomically correct pictures as well. It also reproduces other parts of the RPG's new info such as the descriptions of Corporations and the Mektech robots created by Cowley.

New material appears in this book, which is to say some of the old material which originally appeared in "Spacecraft 2000 - 2100 AD", and which did not appear in the new "Spacecraft 2100 - 2200 AD". The Skybase and Nomad entries appear here, as do several of the unknown object entries (though one is reproduced from the TTA RPG). While I was really pleased to see these entries, I was also really disappointed to see them in this book. The reason for this is that it reproduces almost all of the poorly copied artwork from the RPG book.

All of the starship and unknown object illustrations must have been large, colour, CGI artwork. This has been shrunk down to fit the small format of the book, and turned into generally bad black and white pictures. The CGI artwork of the various planets, in particular, does not fare well in this process. With the exception of the skybase, NOMAD and some Unknown Object pictures, all the artwork is reproduced from the TTA RPG. They really should have saved the unknown objects for an artwork book, because they are not displayed to advantage here at all. It's also a sad fact that the proofreading issues that have plagued this series crop up again. Unknown Wreck: Sol, for example, has a sadly garbled paragraph that detracts from the writeup significantly.

This book is not a game supplement, and it's definately not an artwork book. Instead it is more of an expansion to the TTA universe background for people who don't want to buy the TTA RPG for the same information. If you want the fantastic pictures that Cowley's original books contained, this book is not for you. If you want a supplement for the Roleplaying Game, this book is not for you. If you want more detail on the TTA Universe, and don't want to buy the RPG, then this might be for you. Perhaps.

Essentially a repackaging of the new information from the TTA RPG, potential buyers would do well to click on the Amazon link to that product, and read the reviews submitted there. Once you've done that you should be in a position to decide if you want to purchase this product.

Local Space - not good

It almost seems like this book was cobbled together, with bits and pieces from the other books and even role playing games.

Here are some things that i found very uninspired:

The Alpha Centaurians look alot like elves

The Proximans look like a cross between chimps and dwarves

They seem to spend an inordinate amount of time on the reproductive

habits of both species

Entire sections of diologue have been lifted, word for word, from the

original series.

There are numerous spelling and grammatical errors.

The world of the TTA seems to bear a striking similarity to the Shadowrun RPG.

- The megacorporations seem to be in almost total control.

- There are a few privilaged elite, and the remainder are poor and at the corps & governments mercy.

- Corps and governments seem to be in a constant state of conflict.

- The government seems to have little or no control.

- Crime seems to be rabid and uncontrolled.

I know it sounds like ranting, but I was expecting alot more.

It gives just enough new material to make it interesting and its graphics are exceptional but these are its ONLY good points

Flute making process is well explained

The Flute Shop is an excellent choice for those who want to delve into making Native American style flutes. I have made a few rather successful flutes in the past couple years from instructions by another flute maker, but this book came highly recommended and I wanted to see what I could do to improve my flutes.

This book very clearly explained the intricacies of making a flute and I think will help me improve the sound of my flutes even more. This is a basic flute making book and will not give measurements for more than a few flutes, but it explains various styles and techniques very well.

rookie flute maker

I got this book based on the recommendation of a world class flute maker. I was not disappointed. Good detail, referencss, basic instructions, finger charts and tuning charts. Everything one needs to build their first flute. I've since created 5 flutes. That's not to say there hasn't been some trial and error. The book even covers how to repair some mistakes. I have now created my own way to build flutes. I am very pleased with the book. My next project will be a drone flute.

Best of its kind!

I have been making Native American style flutes for 15 years, and I'm frequently asked for advice by beginning makers. I always recommend this book. It provides simple, easy to follow instructions which will result in a very playable flute if they are following carefully. There are other references which delve more deeply into theory and history of the flute, but this is the Betty Crocker Cookbook of the flute world.
