Rapid Review Laboratory Testing

I have enjoyed reading through this book. It is very similar to Goljan's other book, but in addition this book provides better explanations of important pathology terms, and test done to diagnose patients.
If you plan to use this book during Basic Sciences, I recommend using it as a supplement to a more substantial book.
If you plan to use this book to review for STEP 1 I would recommend that you use it only if you have enough time (more than a 2 months to study).

what would that look like? " Most surprising though

I would argue this is the most thoughtful formal treatment of this topic available. Keith Wiley makes a distillation of decades of argument, speculation, and discussion on mind-uploading yet manages to keep it organized, thoughtful, and coherent. While no one can yet answer how we would do it, this author doesn't bother with that. Instead, he concentrates on the question, "If we could, what would that look like?"

Most surprising though, even if you are not interested in the idea of mind-uploading, the book is still compelling. In the process of tackling the big questions of this unusual topic, he purposefully takes on some of the big questions of philosophy of mind and theories about consciousness. I found myself making a list of further reading my second time through this book.

It's a short book, but not necessarily an easy one. Yet I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the relationship of mind to body, consciousness, and/or identity.

An excellent discussion of uploading

An excellent discussion of uploading, a topic that is only now beginning to be discussed seriously and will be one of the major issues of the 21st century. I especially enjoyed the taxonomy on the many possible uploading scenarios. I also concur with Dr. Wiley's conclusions regarding moving beyond traditional views of identity that no longer apply given what are learning about neuroscience and what will happen with uploading and AI.

If you want to learn neuroanatomy i suggest using a lippincott or another book for the theoretical and this book for it's clinical correlates. Would've rated it lower if not for the clinical correlate sections at the end of every chapter.

Excelent and "readable" neuroanatomy

Theres no way to learn everything about the Central Nervous System in an easier way than with this book.Its even got a separate Clinical section for every chapter!! I really enjoyed reading this book, along with Adam's Neurology(another great one).

The only con is that its got a couple of mistakes(maybe not serious) for example when you get to the part describing the Direct and Indirect Talamus-Striatal Pathways and a couple more.

Grade 7 Up-Cobain, a psychiatric nurse who works with teens, provides facts, clears away misconceptions, and conveys support and understanding to young adults who are feeling depressed. She discusses warning signs and urges readers to act upon them. The book is arranged in two parts, the first of which gives statistics and covers the causes and types of depression, the dangers of addictions and eating disorders, and the relationship between depression and suicide. There is also information on the effects of depression on the brain. The second section deals with treatment options and offers suggestions for positive mental and physical health. Moving accounts of young people who have considered or attempted suicide lend a note of urgency to the author's message. Cobain's style is passionate, but is at times overwrought. There are many references to her cousin, Kurt Cobain, the lead singer of the group Nirvana, who committed suicide in 1994. The celebrity link should attract attention; however, as the author and her famed cousin didn't know one another, this aspect seems overdone. Thumbnail black-and-white photographs and sketches illustrate the text. Toby Axelrod's Working Together against Teen Suicide (Rosen, 1996) deals with teens helping their troubled peers, and Nikki Goldman's Teen Suicide (Benchmark, 1995) is less personal in tone. Without question, Cobain has compiled a fount of information, and she is articulate. However, while useful for consultation and reports, the book is wordy and repetitious.

Occasionally, a new tool is discovered – or at least, refined – and we include one which was just discovered in 1999 – introspective sort. But most of them have been part of the standard programmer’s tool chest for decades.

Unlike the majority of textbooks in this field, this book takes a “code first” approach.  After a brief introduction of the concepts, a short complete ANSI-C program is presented for students to analyse. A number of questions arising from the code are then posed and answered in the Socratic format. In this way, we hope that the reader will not only become fluent in the concepts but also in the “nuts and bolts” of translating these concepts into functioning, efficient standard C code. Variable pointer diagrams are developed and used extensively to aid understanding of the more complex data structures and their manipulation.

I'm one of the authors of this book, and I wanted to point out that this book comes with a CD-ROM full of animations illustrating the concepts.

Some of the animations are in the form of diagrams, while other animations are in the form of role-plays -- where people play the part of various elements of the data structure, illustrating how they interact.

Most books on this subject are dry and boring. To avoid this, we used an informal story-telling style, interjecting intersting stories and humour.

About the Author

Peter W.G. Morris is Professor and Head of the School of Construction and Project Management at University College London (UCL). He is the author of over 110 papers and several books on the management of projects. A previous Chairman of the Association for Project Management, he was awarded the Project Management Institute's 2005 Research Achievement Award, IPMA's 2009 Research Award, and APM's 2008 Sir Monty Finniston Life-Time Achievement Award.


Jeffrey K. Pinto holds the Andrew Morrow and Elizabeth Lee Black Chair in the Management of Technology at Penn State University. He is the author or editor of 23 books and over 120 scientific papers. Dr. Pinto is a two-time recipient of the Distinguished Contribution Award from the Project Management Institute (1997, 2001) for outstanding service to the project management profession. He received PMI's Research Achievement Award in 2009.


Jonas Soderlund is Professor at BI Norwegian School of Management and responsible for its executive education within the area of project management. He is a founding member of the KITE Research Group (Knowledge Integration and Innovation in Transnational Enterprise) based at Linkoping University. He has researched and published widely on the management and organization of projects and project-based firms and the evolution of project competence.

About the Author
Stephen Pentak received his BA from Union College in New York, and his MFA from Tyler School of Art at Temple University. He is Professor Emeritus of Art, and a past Associate Dean of the College of the Arts at Ohio State University. He has been the recipient of four Ohio Arts Council Fellowships and he has been a visiting resident artist at Delfina Studios in London, and Glasgow School of Art. Pentak's recent solo exhibitions include shows at Kathryn Markel Fine Arts in New York and Susan Street in San Diego. He is co-author of COLOR BASICS as well as DESIGN BASICS. www.stephenpentak.com.
