Amazing book!!!! I love everything and the only problem I had was which to make first.

I don't think the cover does it justice.
With over 27 sets of patterns
it's jam packed with things to make.
When the title says Crochet for Christmas
it doesn't just mean decorations.
There is a fantastic mix of projects to
decorate for Christmas and things to
make for people for Christmas.
I love the fact that it's a mix of patterns
and to be very honest I think I would
make just about everything in this book!

The projects are varied, everything from a hood,
cowl, slippers to snowman ornaments and
Rudolf jar cozies.

The book is made up of multiple designers
using different yarns and stitches to
create some amazing patterns.
You get to know each designer with each pattern.

There are patterns for every level of crocheter
so you are sure to find something to make in the book.
The book starts with the Silver & Spice Hood
and it's a fantastic pattern at an easy level.

All the patterns are in an easy to read
written format and in some of the patterns
the chart is also included.

As each pattern is designed by a different
designer it means that each of the projects
is unique from any other.
All the patterns use Lion Brand yarn
which means they are easy to acquire
and not too costly.

I cannot express enough about the
amazing designs.
Some are fun like the Angel, Santa's Helper,
& Snowman ornaments.
Others are gorgeous like the North Star Cowl.
The range of patterns are perfect for children,
adults, girls & boys.
I can't believe how much is covered in this one book.
You could make just about everything for Christmas
from this book.
They even have a Glamour Top which you can
make so that you look fantastic
on Christmas Day.

There is even a Tunisian Crochet cardigan.
It looks amazing and looks just like knit.

This book is amazing value for money
and one that you'll be able to bring out every Christmas.

Ellison is the only author in Hollywood ever to win the Writers Guild of America award for Outstanding Teleplay (solo work) four times, most recently for “Paladin of the Lost Hour,” his Twilight Zone episode that was Danny Kaye’s final role, in 1987. In 2006, Ellison was awarded the prestigious title of Grand Master by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America. Dreams With Sharp Teeth, the documentary chronicling his life and works, was released on DVD in May 2009.

7 Sci-fi stories by Harlan Ellison

This collection of short fiction by Harlan Ellison consists of only seven stories. It was originally published in the late 1960’s and a second edition was released in 1983—the latter being the edition I read. Despite a bit of Cold War zeitgeist--most notably in the title story—this collection holds up well to time.

I’ll proceed by discussing each of the seven stories.

1.) “I Have No Mouth & I Must Scream”: It’s after World War III, the Soviets, Americans, and Chinese had built artificial intelligences (AIs) to help prosecute the war. The AIs ganged up against humanity and exterminated all humans—excepting five individuals (4 men and 1 woman.) The AI finds a way to indefinitely extend the lives of the five so that it can keep its playthings around. The AI is kind of like a sadistic child with an ant farm. The story is told from the perspective of one of the five remaining humans.

2.) “Big Sam Was My Friend”: A folksy narrator tells the tale of how a fellow interstellar circus performer met his ends. The deceased, Big Sam, was capable of teleportation, like the character Nightcrawler (Kurt Wagner) in the X-men. Ellison does an excellent job of creating a unique character and tone in this story.

3.) “Eyes of Dust”: On a planet of beautiful people, there remains a family of uggos--and the child is the ugliest of all. However, ugliness isn’t the boy’s only unique trait. This is one of the weaker stories of the collection in my opinion, but it’s not bad.

4.) “World of The Myth”: The three-person crew of a spaceship crashes on an unfamiliar planet. The planet is inhabited by ant-like creatures that can form complex shapes, and through such displays the creatures can reflect the essence of who a person is back at them. This proves more than the despicable captain of the small crew can bear.

5.) “Lonelyache”: This story is more realism than speculative fiction—or at least I interpreted it that way. It’s about a guy who’s gone through a divorce recently, and is living alone. The story intersperses recurringly-themed dreams in which men are trying to kill the lead character, with waking sequences which revolve around the man’s troubled relationships with women.

6.) “Delusion For a Dragon Slayer”: In the Introduction, we are told by Theodore Sturgeon that the description in this story is very much how people on hallucinogens experience the world. I can see what Sturgeon is saying. The story begins with a series of vignettes about people who died for no logical reason and at the least likely times. The story then tells an extended tale of one such death, that of the lead character, in a way that mixes dream and reality in a way that’s hard to differentiate.

7.) “Pretty Maggie Moneyeyes”: A man in Las Vegas hits the jackpot on a slot machine. He feels compelled to engage in the very sucker-like behavior of playing the same machine again, but he wins again and then keeps winning. The casino obviously suspects foul play with the second jackpot, but they can’t find anything wrong with the machine or any way in which the man might be cheating. All their investigation reveals is that a woman had died playing that machine some time before.

I’d recommend this book for those who like short speculative fiction. The best of the stories are outstanding, and the worst of them are still intriguing and readable. I will say that it’s not a collection for readers with delicate sensibilities--including young readers. (e.g. Rape is a theme that repeats in a couple of stories.)

Like catching up with old friends!

I first found Harlan Ellison in my teens. I don't know that I understood all he wrote but I liked it! I've moved many times but his books have always made the trip. Entire book shelf has nothing but Ellison. Now that my hands don't work as well I am gradually filling up my Kindle with his stories.

This book is full of brilliant stories. If you haven't read them before buy this book now. If you've read them before a return trip always reveals more.

On occasion, I read two or more books at the same time if they address many of the same issues. For example, this book and Carol Belkin's The Bill of Rights: The Fight to Secure America's Liberties. Dissent has indeed been one of the most powerful forces prior to, during, and following the War for Independence. It is also true had there been no Bill of Rights and what its ten amendments establish, it would have been difficult -- if not impossible -- to protest anything within the legal framework that has since preserved and protected the "inalienable right" to which the Declaration of Independence refers.

According to Belkin, "Despite the fluidity of meaning that marks the history of federalism, the Bill of Rights has fulfilled James Madison's fervent hope that this 'parchment barrier' would benefit from civic and moral development of the nation. It has proved a strong bulwark for our liberties and a safeguard against the majority's abuse of minorities. And it has established the vocabulary for our most critical discussion of, and fiercest debates over, who we are and what we think is best to do."

In the final chapter, Young shifts his attention to the new elements that have entered the dissent narrative, notably the social media that "have the impact of reaching massive audiences and raising public awareness of [alleged] injustice." I agree with him that postings on Twitter and Facebook "spread the word of protestors of the time and place of the next rally or demonstration or civil disobedience action or spontaneous 'flash protest"...The possibilities are endless for dissenters to utilize these new tools to spread the word, educate people, and increase participation in their movement." However, Young goes on to share his concerns about dissent that does not serve as "the fuel for progress." He refers to irresponsible dissent that is, best uninformed and self-serving, and at worst, unethical or even criminal. There are significant needs that need to be addressed, such as demanding more responsible journalism, demanding that politicians "are beholden to the people and not to those who bankroll them, we need to question authority, we need to speak out [as he has], we need to make sure that 'We the People' really means something. We need to dissent."

Obviously it is impossible for a brief commentary such as mine to do full justice to the abundance of insights, and counsel that Ralph Young provides but I hope that I have at least indicated why I hold his book in such regard. The idea of dissent can be traced back in time thousands of years but its nature and extent as well as its potential power are probably most evident in the history of the United States.

As I began to read this book for the second time, I was again reminded of this observation by Margaret Mead: "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."

The book is written like a story

"Dissent" is an innovative way to tell the story of America. The book is written like a story; it keeps your interest from beginning to end. It is about Americans and the American spirit of standing up for one's self, regardless of the odds. It is our story.
As I was reading "Dissent" I kept thinking that this book is so full of information, I will enjoy reading it again.
The writers of academic history books could follow Ralph Young's lead and make history books far more interesting than they are now.
I highly recommend this book to all who enjoy reading for enjoyment as well as knowledge.

Dissent is Awesome!

This is an elegantly written, intellectually stimulating, and captivating book about American dissenters from colonial times through the present day. The author, Professor Ralph Young (Temple Univ.), is so familiar with the primary sources and secondary literature that he is able to offer both a great narrative and convincing analysis. Some will compare this to Howard Zinn's work, but Young offers a more sophisticated and less ideological history than Zinn. Young clearly is sympathetic to dissenters on the left, but his treatment of dissenters on the right is balanced. Read this book.

Considered by many scholars the finest extant Mexican codex and one of the most important original sources for the study of pre-Columbian religion, the Codex Borgia is a work of profound beauty, filled with strange and evocative images related to calendrical, cosmological, ritual, and divinatory matters. Generally similar to such Mixtec manuscripts as the Codex Nuttall, the Codex Borgia is thought to have its origin (ca. A.D. 1400) in the southern central highlands of Mexico, perhaps in Puebla or Oaxaca. It is most probably a religious document that once belonged to a temple or sacred shrine.
One use of the Codex many have been to divine the future, for it includes ritual 260 day calendars, material on aspects of the planet Venus, and a sort of numerological prognostic of the lives of wedded couples. Another section concerns various regions of the world and the supernatural characters and attributes of those regions. Also described are the characteristics of a number of deities, while still other passages relate to installation ceremonies of rulers in pre-Columbian kingdoms.
Until the publication of this Dover edition, the Codex Borgia has been largely inaccessible to the general public. The priceless original is in the Vatican Library and previous photographic facsimiles are very rare or very expensive or both. Moreover, the original Codex has been damaged over the centuries, resulting in the obscuration and loss of many images. In order to recapture the beauty and grandeur of the original, Gisele Diaz and Alan Rodgers have painstakingly restored the Codex by hand— a seven-year project — employing the most scrupulous research and restoration techniques. Considered by many scholars the finest extant Mexican codex and one of the most important original sources for the study of pre-Columbian religion, the Codex Borgia is a work of profound beauty, filled with strange and evocative images related to calendrical, cosmological, ritual, and divinatory matters. Generally similar to such Mixtec manuscripts as the Codex Nuttall, the Codex Borgia is thought to have its origin (ca. A.D. 1400) in the southern central highlands of Mexico, perhaps in Puebla or Oaxaca. It is most probably a religious document that once belonged to a temple or sacred shrine.
One use of the Codex many have been to divine the future, for it includes ritual 260 day calendars, material on aspects of the planet Venus, and a sort of numerological prognostic of the lives of wedded couples. Another section concerns various regions of the world and the supernatural characters and attributes of those regions. Also described are the characteristics of a number of deities, while still other passages relate to installation ceremonies of rulers in pre-Columbian kingdoms.
Until the publication of this Dover edition, the Codex Borgia has been largely inaccessible to the general public. The priceless original is in the Vatican Library and previous photographic facsimiles are very rare or very expensive or both. Moreover, the original Codex has been damaged over the centuries, resulting in the obscuration and loss of many images. In order to recapture the beauty and grandeur of the original, Gisele Diaz and Alan Rodgers have painstakingly restored the Codex by hand—a seven-year project—employing the most scrupulous research and restoration techniques. Great cheap version of the Borgia Codex

Be warned that you must compare the images from this reproduction to the original, for three reasons: 1) sometimes the authors of this reproduction use colors that do not match the original codex, 2) sometimes the authors of this reproduction place the wrong imagery in the reproduction, for example a monkey's head instead of a humans head, and 3)Sometimes the authors speculate as to what might have been on a page and they use their own judgment, which might be wrong.

Other than that, this is a great reproduction of the Borgia codex. It is cheap, it is light and it is well made. Another thing to keep in mind, the codex borgia is read left to right, this reproduction was printed right to left, so it forces you to read the codex in the wrong direction.

Look at the "plate number" and the page number in the book, they do not match. Also notice that the plate number is in descending order.

I will not go over their 5 star comments except to say that I agree. The amazingly colourful and crisp art in this short book is rivetting. As much as one may credit the reknowned author, deep congratulations should also go to the publisher for a masterful print job.
