A Shadow Bright and Burning (Kingdom on Fire, Book One), by Jessica Cluess

"Vivid characters, terrifying monsters, and world building as deep and dark as the ocean."
--Victoria Aveyard, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Red Queen

I am Henrietta Howel.
The first female sorcerer in hundreds of years.
The prophesied one.
Or am I?

Henrietta Howel can burst into flames.
Forced to reveal her power to save a friend, she's shocked when instead of being executed, she's invited to train as one of Her Majesty's royal sorcerers.

Thrust into the glamour of Victorian London, Henrietta is declared the chosen one, the girl who will defeat the Ancients, bloodthirsty demons terrorizing humanity. She also meets her fellow sorcerer trainees, handsome young men eager to test her power and her heart. One will challenge her. One will fight for her. One will betray her.

But Henrietta Howel is not the chosen one.
As she plays a dangerous game of deception, she discovers that the sorcerers have their own secrets to protect. With battle looming, what does it mean to not be the one? And how much will she risk to save the city—and the one she loves?

Exhilarating and gripping, Jessica Cluess's spellbinding fantasy introduces a powerful, unforgettably heroine, and a world filled with magic, romance, and betrayal. Hand to fans of Libba Bray, Sarah J. Maas, and Cassandra Clare.

"The magic! The intrigue! The guys! We were sucked into this monster-ridden, alternative England from page one. Henrietta is literally a 'girl on fire' and this team of sorcerers training for battle had a pinch of Potter blended with a drop of [Cassandra Clare's] Infernal Devices."
--Justine Magazine

"Cluess gamely turns the chosen-one trope upside down in this smashing dark fantasy."
--Publishers Weekly, Starred Review

"Unputdownable. I loved the monsters, the magic, and the teen warriors who are their world's best hope! Jessica Cluess is an awesome storyteller!"
--Tamora Pierce, #1 New York Times bestselling author

"A fun, inventive fantasy. I totally have a book crush on Rook."
--Sarah Rees Brennan, New York Times bestselling author

"Pure enchantment. I love how Cluess turned the 'chosen one' archetype on its head. With the emotional intensity of my favorite fantasy books, this is the kind of story that makes you forget yourself."
--Roshani Chokshi, New York Times bestselling author of The Star-Touched Queen

"A glorious, fast-paced romp of an adventure. Jessica Cluess has built her story out of my favorite ingredients: sorcery, demons, romance, and danger."
--Kelly Link, author of Pretty Monsters

From School Library Journal
Gr 7 Up—Sixteen-year-old Henrietta Howel has the power to burst into flames. She believes that she will be executed when she comes forward to defend a friend; instead she is invited to train as one of Her Majesty's royal sorcerers, among whom Henrietta is the only female. The heroine struggles to combat the enchantment of Victorian London, even though her male classmates wish to fight against her. With humanity at risk, Henrietta discovers the secrets of others and her own strength while she tries to defeat the Ancients, terrorizing demons. Readers who enjoy books about magic, fantastical monsters, and forces of good and evil will not be able to put this first installment down. While Cluess's debut novel might be reminiscent of J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter," it features a protagonist who proves to be more than just a chosen one with a wand. The work has well-developed secondary characters, including Rook, Henrietta's childhood friend, and while the author takes time to introduce readers to the heroine and her new surroundings, she keeps the adventure moving at a good clip. VERDICT Fantasy fans will rejoice and impatiently await the second volume in this new series.—Karen Alexander, Lake Fenton High School, Linden, MI

Review
"Is it clear that Cluess adores the Harry Potter series and Jane Eyre? Yes. So do you. So does everyone. What matters is that her voice is her own. . . . A Shadow Bright and Burning delivers on the promise of its title. This is a novel that gives off light and heat."
—The New York Times

"Henrietta is pragmatic and bitingly funny, and she more than holds her own in a man’s world. Cluess gamely turns the chosen-one trope upside down in this smashing dark fantasy."
—Publishers Weekly, starred review

"Jessica Cluess manages to hook the reader on the very first page. . . . The pages turn quickly and this first installment in the story is over before the reader will want it to be. The ending is perfect, too. Just enough of a conclusion to be satisfying, but also enough mystery to make readers anxious to see the next installment. Lovely debut novel by a talented writer."
—Huffington Post

"Cthulu Fhtagn," said Mr. Darcy

Cluess takes familiar tropes and turns them into something new and exciting in this Lovecraft-meets-Austen adventure. It's great to see a book play with tropes instead of just mindlessly repeating them. As a bonus, this is an exciting, fast-paced story full of really strong characters. I particularly enjoyed the monsters, which are proper, horrifying, supernatural creatures. If you're looking for a book that takes the court-intrigue, chosen-one, and fantasy-romance genres of YA and tears them apart with eldritch tentacles, look no further.

If you aren't looking for that kind of book...maybe think about your life choices?

By Erinarkin20
A Shadow Bright and Burning by Jessica Cluess is the first book in her Kingdom on Fire series and I have to admit, I loved every minute of this story. As soon as I picked it up, I didn’t want to put it down until I finished.

Henrietta Howel has been keeping a secret from everyone but her best friend – she can control flames. As a teacher at the Brimthorn School for Girls, she struggles to hide the part of her that would expose her for a witch and get her executed but when a sorcerer visits the school after hearing that there have been unexpected and sometimes uncontrollable fires, something happens that forces her to reveal herself. When she finds out she is the one the order has been looking for because of a prophecy, and that she isn’t really a witch but a sorcerer, things quickly change for Henrietta.

I really liked Henrietta as a main character. She is smart and she sometimes did things that put her in danger but she tended to do them for all the right reasons. When Henrietta actually learns why she is so valuable to the sorcerers she actually jumps right into learning more about herself and those around her. What she finds out is something she wasn’t really anticipating and it was great to see her navigate her way through the challenges she faced. I thought as a character, Henrietta had quite a bit of growth throughout this book and I look forward to seeing what’s in store for her next.

I thought the world building in this book was really well done. Yes, London is the setting but the London this group of characters live in is at war with a group of Ancients that routinely attack the people in the in the city and it is filled with magicians who are hiding, sorcerers who have pledged themselves to serve the Queen, and even a hobgoblin as a doctor. Add to this the history of the Ancients and what they are doing and it all came together really well.

Outside of Henrietta, there are a number of characters in this book that help to move the story forward. First, the sorcerer who finds her at the school is Master Agrippa. As an orphan, Henrietta eventually came to view him as somewhat of a father figure and I can’t blame her. Once she knew he wasn’t going to kill her because of her ability, she began to trust him and he was always there to help her. Agrippa took her into his home and began to train her to control her power. He gave her a life she never expected and the fact that he allowed Rook, her best friend to stay with her, only encouraged her to think of him that way.

Rook is Henrietta’s best friend although I hesitate to describe him as that. Yes, he is her friend but it is clear they both care for each other as more than that and they are both willing to do whatever they can to keep each other safe. Rook grew up an orphan with Henrietta at the school but because of what he is (an Unclean), he had a very different role at the school. An Unclean is someone who has been attacked by an Ancient. Rook was attacked and survived but has scars that cause him great pain. The scars are also a direct link to the Ancient who attacked him and this is important because as the attacks from the Ancients continue, Rook plays a critical role in the story.

There are also a number of boys within the Order and they are all solid characters. There are two that stand out more than the others – Blackwood and Magnus. I’m not going to say much about these two but I am excited to see where Cluess takes Henrietta’s relationships with these two in the next book. Where Magnus almost immediately embraces Henrietta into the group, Blackwood holds back. They both have their reasons and while things change drastically for all of these characters by the end of the book, I loved seeing not only the building of the friendships and the trust throughout the book but also the growth both Magnus and Blackwood had because of everything that happens.

There are some other characters that have critical roles in the story. Hargrove is the magician that Henrietta meets and ultimately becomes interested in learning more from…for many reasons that I can’t share. She actually meets him her first day in London and when he reveals some secrets, Henrietta is pulled into something she never expected to be. Plus...he pretty much says whatever he wants to and I loved everything about that. There is also another member of the order that is just looking for a reason to discredit Henrietta but you will have to read the book to find out more about that.

Overall I really enjoyed this book. If you like magic, danger, intrigue, great characters, and a fantastic story, you should definitely consider checking this book out. As a first book in the series, the pacing was well done and the story had me turning the pages to see what would happen next. I can’t wait to get my hands on the next book to see where the story goes next. Go get this one my friends, I don’t think you will be disappointed.

Overall enjoyable read, but not spectacular
By Jessica S
Overall an enjoyable read. I am not the biggest fan of Henrietta, but the author makes up for it with interesting supporting characters. Some of the characters felt flat to me and some of the twists didn't seem to fit with their personalities. Still, I'm impressed for a debut novel (as I think this is) and do look forward to reading future works.

Gabe went home, taking his now wife Andrea with him.

Gabe found out because of Andrea that he had not gotten this girl pregnate at the age of 16. When he left home at the age of 16.

Finally Gabe told Andrea how he felt, and he told Andrea he knew she loved him. She admitted she did and they got married again this time by a priest and that made it right.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. To give an idea of the breadth of this sampling from children's literature through the ages, consider that the volume's "timeline" begins in the Eighth Century—B.C. The bulk of the material in this slipcased paperback, however (and bulk is used here in the most complimentary way possible), spans the past four centuries. The delights are abundant. A facsimile image of a 1777 version of The New-England Primer, America's original schoolbook, is reprinted in its entirety (sample vocabulary words: humiliation, mortification, purification). John Newbery, who "excelled at collecting materials that could be assembled cheaply and attractively to be marketed" (and for whom the Newbery Medal is named), is represented by an excerpt from his book on "Epistolary Writing." In addition to instructing children on how to correspond with church and government officials, he includes Anne Boleyn's last missive to Henry VIII as an example of an "important" letter. Zipes and his collaborators cull from fables, nursery rhymes, comics, poetry, plays, science fiction and fantasy, providing a lens through which the evolution of childhood itself can be viewed. The scope is expansive—the fairy tales hail from Grimm and Perrault, but also from Francesca Lia Block and Julius Lester. Headnotes introduce authors and illustrators, often tracing the lineage between them: Lear's Yonghy-Bonghy-Bo as grandfather to Seuss's Sneetches, for instance. The volume contains dozens of complete works and hundreds of illustrations, including a 32-page color inset of seminal artwork from the likes of Greenaway, Brunhoff and Sendak. A mile wide and very deep, this is an invaluable resource for professionals, but fun for casual perusing, too. All ages. (Oct.)

From School Library Journal
This addition to the highly respected Norton Library is impressive for many reasons. A wealth of material is provided with 170 authors and illustrators represented. Eighty works are presented in their entirety, including The New-England Primer, Robert Louis Stevenson's A Child's Garden of Verses, J. M. Barrie's play of Peter Pan, and Eleanor Estes's The Hundred Dresses. Less familiar but equally interesting selections, such as those by Robert Baden-Powell and Shannon Garst, are also present. The range of material covers a span of 350 years, with the copious but very readable explanatory material provided in terms of introductions, headnotes, etc., tracing not just the historical development of children's literature, but the impact of changing religious, educational, cultural, and social philosophies as well. While the editors state that the book is intended as an introduction to children's literature for students primarily at colleges and universities (and it will be a boon to those charged with designing such courses), it also serves to advance the scholarly study of children's literature as a serious and worthwhile enterprise. Resources for both students and instructors are included on the W.W. Norton Web site.–Grace Oliff, Ann Blanche Smith School, Hillsdale, NJ

From The New Yorker
Citing Johann Amos Comenius's "Orbis Sensualium Pictus," an illustrated encyclopedia and grammar from 1658, as the first commonly accepted work for children, Zipes and his colleagues give a tour of the following three and a half centuries in a colossal volume, nearly twenty-five hundred pages long. Occasionally, the scholarly tone conflicts with the fanciful subject matter ("The Very Hungry Caterpillar" is "a rudimentary game book" whose "very bright colors are characteristic of the period"). But the coverage is impressive, with examples that range from a single illustration to entire works. The anthology is divided into nineteen thematic sections—comics, books of instruction, verse—and includes both canonical stories like Oscar Wilde's "The Happy Prince" and such obscurities as versions of fairy tales preserved in nineteenth-century British chapbooks. Color plates convey the astonishing variety of visual art in books from Struwwelpeter onward, and are enough to make anyone feel a little nostalgic.

What a treasure box this is
By G. DeCandido
If you teach children's literature, or think about children's literature, or have children or were once a child, this mighty compendium is for you. It offers in its rich pages a history of children's literature and an array of works, not only in extract but in more than 40 examples of complete stories, from Peter Pan to Roll of Thunder Hear my Cry. The many introductions and glosses are written with spirit and verve: Dr Seuss described as "high-spirited anarchy" or Frog and Toad as "perfect books of their kind." Alphabets and chapbooks, primers, fairy tales (including ten versions of Little Red Riding Hood, from Perrault to Francesca Lia Block), picture books, nursery rhymes, comics, fantasy and sf, school stories and more are included, from authors as hallowed as Newbery and as modern as Nikki Grimes. This kind of anthology is always dependent on what one can get permission to reprint, under that stricture its editors have done marvelously well. Online resources keyed to this title are also available. Profusely illustrated with black and white images, a section of good color plates is included.

A Summertime of Reading
By John Matlock
Here in one giant sized paperback book (supplied in a slipcase) is 2200 pages of the best of children's literature of the past 350 years. I suppose I should say this is one man's opinion of the best in literature because exchanging this title for that one could be the subject of many hours of discussion.

About many of the stories included, 'Peter Pan' for instance or Dr Seuss stories, I think there would be little argument. About others, I would like this one, you would like that one. Remember though, we're limited to stories for which we can get rights or which are in the public domain, and to only a couple of thousand pages.

All in all, here's a summertime of reading. Some 40 longer works, hundreds of shorter stories. 400+ illstrations including a color section. Highly recommended.

content versus presentation
By mkb
The contents of this book continue to be unsurpassed. However, the massive book is printed with a paper cover and very thin pages making it almost unreadable. It's easy to see, once it's in one's hands, why it has to be in a slipcase. This version would be better split into 2 or 3 slimmer volumes within the slipcase.

Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance, by Angela Duckworth

In this must-read book for anyone striving to succeed, pioneering psychologist Angela Duckworth shows parents, educators, students, and business people—both seasoned and new—that the secret to outstanding achievement is not talent but a focused persistence called “grit.”

Why do some people succeed and others fail? Sharing new insights from her landmark research on grit, MacArthur “genius” Angela Duckworth explains why talent is hardly a guarantor of success. Rather, other factors can be even more crucial such as identifying our passions and following through on our commitments.

Drawing on her own powerful story as the daughter of a scientist who frequently bemoaned her lack of smarts, Duckworth describes her winding path through teaching, business consulting, and neuroscience, which led to the hypothesis that what really drives success is not “genius” but a special blend of passion and long-term perseverance. As a professor at the University of Pennsylvania, Duckworth created her own “character lab” and set out to test her theory.

Here, she takes readers into the field to visit teachers working in some of the toughest schools, cadets struggling through their first days at West Point, and young finalists in the National Spelling Bee. She also mines fascinating insights from history and shows what can be gleaned from modern experiments in peak performance. Finally, she shares what she’s learned from interviewing dozens of high achievers—from JP Morgan CEO Jamie Dimon to the cartoon editor of The New Yorker to Seattle Seahawks Coach Pete Carroll.

Winningly personal, insightful, and even life-changing, Grit is a book about what goes through your head when you fall down, and how that—not talent or luck—makes all the difference.

Good stories, difficult to justify a full book
By Aaron Gabriel
I commend the author for her effort on this book. The stories of people with the ability to persist are lively and interesting, but the overall feeling is of reading small vignette style biographies of people who are smarter, better, and more talented than you are, with anecdotal insights sprinkled throughout.

There's a measure of inspiration in her foundational message that, through hard work and persistence, you can become the best version of yourself. Her main point is that it's unlikely that you know your own limits, and that the act of striving against them each day can take you to an unexpectedly good place. However, the true value of this book would have been to teach us the best methods for increasing and maintaining our own grit, and to show that those methods are proven through research. Unfortunately, that doesn't yet exist because the research hasn't been conducted, except in a preliminary fashion.

Because that answer doesn't exist, the book and stories are reduced to a collection of recitations of interviews of successful people, not unlike other business and self-help books. It has a dusting of authority from the author herself, since she has substantially contributed to the field. An interested reader can glean their own lessons from that material, in additions to the insights the author provides. Still, the book lacks true weight, and would be greatly served by an update in a few years as the author and her peers conduct more research on the subject.

Save yourself a pile of time and just read her paper "Grit: perseverance and passion for long-term goals", Journal of personality and social psychology, 2007. This book is the results from there, plus a collection of exaggerations and cherry-picked anecdotes.

7 to 9 13ths Worthwhile

Interesting and worthwhile theory and supporting evidence, for 7-9 chapters. Like too many books in this genre, the author seems to have run out of content yet continues with scant new insight and increasing speculation.

Decision and indecision - the consequences for the developer
By Albrice
For those interested in decision theory, the author does a sterling job of tracing the impacts that different approaches to decision-making, by different parties, has on the development of a complex and unique mixed use project:
"But like it or not, the power to make these final decisions rested with the various public bodies overseeing the compliance with the city's regulations" (p.106) "It was that an architectural decision had been made by a political body that appeared to care little about archictecture..." (p.105) "Still undecided, however, was the shape of the atrium. This delay was having troubling consequences for the entire construction schedule because the city refused to issue a demolition permit until it saw the final design drawings..." "The developers knew they were unhappy with the atrium but they did not know why" (p.154) "They bungled it because they wouldn't do anything without having three decisions" (p.184) "The debate over the colour of glass dragged on for months" (p.202) "Mancini said he would take the matter under advisement. He was not ready to make a decision on the spot" (p.209) "While Johnson applauded group decisions intellectually, he felt strongly that there was not always a 'right' decision for every dilemma" (p.229")
The book clearly articulates the dialogue between the different decision-making parties and makes for an interesting case study.

Ideal case study for developers
By Wallace F. Smith
My students - this was, for years, the best-liked textbook in Berkeley real estate courses - saw this well-written history of an actual commercial development as a sure-fire hit movie. We selected the cast - not too difficult: incompetent and corrupt contractors, sublimely ignorant city officials, totally dense bankers, a brilliant artist who got ripped off, shady lawyers, venal professors - well, they lost forty million dollars or so. Reporter Frantz covered the (subsiding) ground with hearty humor but without serious libel. The reader is supposed to do the numbers.

INSPIRED, BRILLIANT, NECESSARY FUN BOOK FOR PIANISTS
By Baker Jay
One of the truly great books for pianists who play the great American songbook repertoire. Why it is out of print is something beyond my comprehension. It offers so much by a master of this music, the great Dick Hyman. I have gotten so many ideas from this wonderful, useful essential helper, that it is worth its weight in platinum. It will in many cases open up your mind to new possibilities of harmonization, while still offering the traditional chording from the original songs. Buy it, cherish it, use it and you will wear it out -- with joy.

The essence of this book is that it provides some of the greatest American songs ever written -- with their traditional harmonies indicated by chord symbols. The brilliant, inspired part is that there are also alternate harmonies printed in red chord symbols so that you can provide some interesting and tasty fresh harmonies that may not have occurred to you. Or you can alternate between the two. A great idea, much imitated -- but not as well done as by Dick Hyman in this book (and a sequel, the name of which I can't remember right now). I believe both are out of print -- which is a publishing sin!

My only caveat, and it is a small one, is that the songs are presented in lead sheet form, that is, they are not full versions of the songs with left and right hand parts. The songs have the melodies with chord symbols (and alternate chord symbols). You have to be able to read the chord symbols and provide the left hand accompaniment yourself to be able to fully utilize this excellent book, so a certain amount of musical skill is necessary.

PLEASE PUT THIS BOOK BACK IN PRINT. GOOD MUSICIANS NEED IT AND ALL OTHERS CAN PROFIT FROM ITS USE!!!!!

OK for beginners
By italtrav
I was disappointed. Some of the songs have very few, even no, changes or substitutions, and all too many of the substitutions were quite minor. Overall, I would suggest any of the Frank Mantooth books over this.
